68% of the Peruvian avocado exported was sent to the Netherlands, the US, Spain, and Chile
Peruvian avocado exported – The president of the consulting firm Inform@cción, Fernando Cilloniz Benavides, stated that Peru had exported 525,829,494 kilos of fresh avocado for $1,050,664,197 in 2021, achieving a 28.2% increase in volume and a 39% increase in value when compared to the 410,000,000 kilos worth $755,829. 979 it shipped in 2020.
The main destinations for the Peruvian fresh avocado were the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, and Chile, which together accounted for 68% of the total volume shipped (358,000 tons), Benavides stated.
In 2021, the Netherlands acquired 180 thousand tons of fresh avocado from Peru (in 2020 it purchased nearly 140,000 tons), the United States bought 90 thousand tons (nearly 80,000 tons in 2020), Spain acquired 88,000 tons (71,000 tons in the previous year), and Chile bought 71,500 tons (36,000 tons in 2020).
Other important markets were the United Kingdom, which acquired 38,000 tons (34,000 tons in 2020); Russia, 11,000 tons (13,000 tons in the previous year); China, 14,000 tons (13,000 tons in 2020); South Korea, Hong Kong, Canada, Belgium, Bolivia, Italy, Argentina, among others.
2022 Campaign
Cilloniz said he expected Peru would export more than 600,000 tons of fresh avocado in 2022, i.e. nearly 20% more than in the previous year.
He said there were many new plantations on the coast and in the mountains, such as in Huancavelica and Ayacucho, that were being managed by large companies, but above all by small producers.
“There are many new avocado plantations throughout the country. Especially in the coastal valleys and the upper parts of the ravines, towards the Sierra, such as Huaytará and Castrovirreyna (provinces of Huancavelica), so exports of this fruit will continue to grow,” he added.
In this regard, he recommended that the new plantations should try to avoid harvesting their products between May and August, the period in which Peru’s production peaks and therefore prices decrease. “The early avocado, which is harvested between January and March, and the late avocado, from September to December, achieve good prices. That’s where the new plantations should focus on,” he concluded.
